Nadette Charlet

Artist and former illustrator. Belgian by birth, West Cork by choice.

A Few Words About Me

Born in Belgium a good few decades ago, I always loved drawing and creating. After completing a degree in art teaching, my life path took me to travel a lot and feed my curiosity and creativity in other parts of the planet. I ended up staying in a wild corner of Ireland.

I settled in the beautiful Beara Peninsula in 2005, home-schooling my children and traveling the world together every winter. Embracing the creative inspiration of both worlds.

That half nomadic lifestyle stayed with me well after the boys left the nest. Nowadays I spend a few months every winter in the far-east, mainly India, resourcing and exploring more each year. I happily improvise my studio wherever I stay long enough, whether it is an artist residency or a place where I feel like to retreat on my own.

My inspiration and my work.

For years my inspiration was driven by the wild beauty of West Cork, the country that adopted me, and vice versa. Landscapes and still lifes, figurative work depicting the deep nostalgia of the Irish for their land and heritage. I used oils or watercolours on small formats, at home.

In the last years my work has taken a different path and has become much more intuitive, sometimes abstract, coming from a deeper place within myself. I paint people, moments, connections, emotions. The beauty of Humanity. I became hungry for larger formats and tend to use acrylics and inks on board, free canvas or local handmade paper, all depending on the logistics of the moment, at home or abroad.

Art has always been a basic need for me, a precious gift, a special space, a precious and intimate moment of joy.

A few facts about my artist’s journey.

In Belgium, I worked as a freelance illustrator and paper engineer (pop-up books) for Belgian and French editors, included Casterman and Moulinsart (“Tintin”).

In Ireland, from 2005 (Beara Peninsula, West Cork), I carried out my illustrator work for a few years, before the inspiration of my surroundings took me to paint and draw Ireland for myself.

Over the years I took part in numerous group exhibitions (Skibbereen, Kenmare, Casteltownbere, Cork City, Schull). I had a duo exhibition with Charles Tyrell in the Copper Mine Museum in Allihies. I was selected in the RHA annual 2019, and had a few solo exhibitions in Schull and Allihies. I won an award in the annual member exhibition at the West Cork Art Center Uillinn in Skibbereen in 2025. In 2025 I also took part to an exhibition with Sarah Walker in Edinburgh.

In July 2022 I opened “8 Cows Gallery”, in the small village of Allihies, with the aim of bringing Art to the most rural places: it was the furthest art gallery from Dublin.
